Kōrure coming to Maungaharuru!

Ka haere mai ngā kōrure ki Maungaharuru!

We will be welcoming kōrure (mottled petrel) chicks to Maungaharuru on Monday 10 April 2017. This is the fourth and probably last translocation of chicks, so may be your last opportunity to see and hold these beautiful manu (which are a lot like a tītī).

The schedule for the day is below.

Schedule for Monday 10 April

Please note: this schedule and date is subject to change due to the weather and the condition of the chicks. If you would like to double check if it is going ahead on the day, you can phone the Boundary Stream Base at 06 8397384, text Hayley 021 120 4346 or phone Melissa (DOC) 027 886 2151. Note the mobile phone reception is unreliable at Boundary Stream, but you can call the Base landline (above). It can be very cold and wet on the maunga so please dress warm, bring a jacket and good footwear (e.g. gumboots).

  • 1:30pm   Visitors to make own way to Maungaharuru/Boundary Stream base, Pohokura Rd http://goo.gl/maps/LoF22 google map directions from Napier
  • 2pm   Afternoon tea at Maungaharuru Base for early arrivals
  • 2:30 – 3:30pm   DOC to begin transporting people (in 4WD) to Maungaharuru seabird site (Boundary Stream) from the Base
  • 3:30pm   Chicks arrive by plane at Napier Airport
  • 3:30-4pm   Transfer chicks to Maungaharuru (helicopter)
  • 4 – 4.30 pm   Chicks arrive at Maungaharuru
  • 4:35pm   Pōwhiri for Manu
  • 4:45 – 5pm   Rehydration begins and will continue into the dark – bring a torch if staying to the end
  • 5:30pm – 6pm   DOC transports people back to Base
  • 7pm   Hydrating may be completed around this time, all visitors to have departed site before dark, only volunteers and required DOC staff to remain
